The Intolerant Response to Aamir Khan’s Intolerance Comments

Breaking his silence on the raging debate over acts of intolerance, actor Aamir Khan on Monday expressed “alarm” and despondency over the rise in such cases “in the last six to eight months”.

In conversation with Anant Goenka, Wholetime Director & Head New Media, The Indian Express, at the eighth edition of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, Khan said a sense of “insecurity” and “fear” had seeped deep within society, even in his family.

(Wife) Kiran and I have lived all our lives in India. For the first time, she said, should we move out of India? That’s a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make to me. She fears for her child. She fears about what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers everyday. That does indicate that there is a sense of growing disquiet,” he said.

Asked for his view on the trend of writers, artists, historians and scientists returning their awards, Khan said this was one way of getting their point across. “For creative people, to voice what they feel is important. A number of creative people — historians and scientists have increasingly had a certain feeling that they feel they need to express. One of the ways of expressing their dissatisfaction or disappointment is to return awards.”

iPhone 7 to Be Waterproof with 3 GB Ram

iPhone 7 to Be Waterproof with 3 GB Ram

Apple iPhone 7, which Apple is expected to launch next year, could feature a memory boost, according to a research firm. The handset is also said to have waterproof capabilities. The research firm also expects Apple to launch a 4-inch iPhone next year.

TrendForce said that it expects the next iPhone - currently expected to be called the iPhone 7 - to sport 3GB of RAM. Interestingly, TrendForce notes that the '5.5-inch' version of the next iPhone will bear 3GB of RAM, with no word on whether the smaller variant will get the same amount of RAM. If not, this could suggest that Apple may have plans to make the 'Plus' model of its iPhone lineup more feature-rich in the coming years.

Samsung Galaxy J1

Samsung Galaxy J1

Samsung's rumoured new Galaxy J-series smartphone, the Galaxy J1 mini, has been tipped in several leaks. The Samsung Galaxy J1 mini has been spotted on GFXbench listings as well as Zauba listing, and lastly at chipset maker Spreadtrum's database that refers the Galaxy J1 mini name.
According to the GFXBench listing (via GSMArena), the yet-to-be-announced Galaxy J1 mini comes with SM-J105F model number and packs a quad-core Spreadtrum (SC8830) processor clocked at 1.5GHz. It is said to feature a 4.3-inch 480x800 pixels display; include 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of inbuilt storage. The new Samsung Galaxy J1 mini is further said to sport a 5-megapixel rear camera alongside a 0.3-megapixel front camera.
In a separate leak, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop-based J1 mini was also spotted at an Indian import/ export site, Zauba, listed as shipped in November with model number SM-J105F. The smartphones were shipped from South Korea, and had a declared value of Rs. 3,368. To be noted is that import/ export website price listings are only declared values, and usually are not accurate reflections of actual market price.
Lastly, chipset maker Spreadtrum appears to have confirmed the Samsung Galaxy J1 mini's existence by listing the handset in its database.
Samsung in India markets its Galaxy J-series as entry-level 4G smartphones. We can expect the Galaxy J1 mini to support 4G as well. The company so far has launched the Galaxy J1 in India at Rs. 7,190; the Galaxy J1 Ace was priced at Rs. 6,300, and lastly, the Galaxy J2 smartphone, which was launched in September, went on sale at Rs. 8,490. The Samsung Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 were separately launched in India back in July. The company earlier this month in China introduced the Galaxy J3.

Army Pays Tribute to Colonel Santosh Mahadik Who Died Fighting Terrorists

Army Pays Tribute to Colonel Santosh Mahadik Who Died Fighting Terrorists
SRINAGAR:  For a week, Colonel Santosh Mahadik led his troops in a hunt for terrorists who crossed the border recently and are hiding in the thick jungles of Kupwara in Kashmir. On Tuesday, the officer died after being shot in the head during a heavy gunfight.

The Army today paid a moving tribute to the 38-year-old colonel, who leaves behind his wife and two sons, 11 and seven.
Colonel Mahadik was the commanding officer of anti-terror force 41 Rashtriya Rifles and always led from the front, according to his colleagues.

The Kupwara operation was particularly challenging because of the inhospitable terrain, but the Colonel chose to personally lead his men in the operation. The search for the terrorists continues, says the army.

The son of a milkman in Maharashtra, Santosh Mahadik stepped away from the family trade to join the army.

Friends describe him as a champion boxer, goalkeeper and runner; one of the fittest boys in school.

An officer of the elite Para Commando force of the army, he volunteered to take charge of anti-terror operations in Kashmir.

The Army said the Colonel had led many successful counter terrorist operations and was awarded the Sena medal for gallantry.

"We owe a deep debt of gratitude to officers like Santosh who lead from the front and are willing to pay the ultimate price in the fight against terrorism," Lieutenant General DS Hooda, Army Commander, Northern Command said.

Colonel Mahadik was the second senior officer killed while fighting terrorists in Kashmir.

Colonel MM Rai, commanding officer of 42 Rashtriya Rifles was killed in January in an encounter with terrorists in south Kashmir's Tral area.

ays after yoga guru Baba Ramdev made his debut in the instant noodles business with Patanjali Atta Noodles, Food Safety and Regulatory Authority of India officials said the noodles have not been approved by the agency.

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana government took Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swacch Bharat campaign to a new height on Tuesday by deciding to recruit only those people for select jobs who don't defecate in the open.

Advertisements issued by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Kurukshetra in prominent dailies on Tuesday said for the post of block coordinators, preference will be given to candidates "not defecating in the open". The candidates must be graduates. Similar conditions have been prescribed for the post of cluster motivators in the same advertisement.

To ensure that the selected candidates do not violate the stipulated conditions, they will have to give a written undertaking that they use toilets and don't defecate in the open, officials said. They will then work under the central government's Clean India Mission.

Prabhjot Singh, additional deputy commissioner-cum-chief executive officer of DRDA Kurukshetra said the state government put in the toilet condition after guidelines were received for the Clean India Mission from the central government. "Conditions in the advertisement are just reproduction of the Centre's guidelines," he said.

According to the 2011 census, Haryana has 47.18 lakh households of which 69% have toilets while nearly 30% people defecate in the open. Just about 1% households depend on public toilets.

This is for the first time that the Manohar Lal Khattar government has put such a condition for government jobs. Earlier, the state government had amended the Haryana Panchayati Raj Act and made toilet-at-home condition mandatory for those contesting panchayat polls. However, this was stayed by the Supreme Court after three women challenged the amendments. The other conditions included a minimum educational qualification of Class X for those contesting for the sarpanch's post.
PARIS: Shooting broke out in a northern suburb of Paris during an anti-terrorist police operation,
Policemen hurt in Paris shootout during manhunt for ninth suspect

sources said on Wednesday, five days after the worst attacks in French history killed 129 people in the capital.

There was an exchange of gunfire during the operation in Saint-Denis, according to a source close to the investigation, who could not confirm who was targeted in the operation. Another source said a special armed response unit took part in the raid. Firemen said one person was lightly injured.

The shootout came as France remains on high alert after a video revealed a ninth man may have taken part in the Paris attacks. Terror group Islamic State has claimed the bloodshed.

Police across Europe are hunting the newest suspect, after footage showed a third man in a car used by gunmen who opened fire at bars and restaurants in central Paris.
It is not clear if this ninth man is one of two suspected accomplices detained in Belgium or is on the run, potentially with 26-year-old fugitive Frenchman Salah Abdeslam who carried out one of the attacks at Bonne Biere cafe along with his suicide-bomber brother Brahim.

French President Francois Hollande on Wednesday will hold a meeting to discuss proposals to extend the state of emergency declared after the worst attacks in French history for three months. It will then be put to vote by lawmakers Thursday and Friday.

In a sign of the nervousness gripping Europe after Friday's carnage, a football match between Germany and the Netherlands was cancelled on Tuesday and the crowd evacuated after police acted on a "serious" bomb threat.

Apple Watch launched in India, starts at Rs 30,900

HIGHLIGHTS

• Apple has launched its much-awaited Watch range in the country ahead of Diwali

• Apple Watch comes in 40 combinations in two case sizes of 38mm and 42mm

• It comes to India pre-loaded with watchOS 2 and boasts of 1,300 native apps

NEW DELHI: Close on the heels of launching iPhone 6S and 6S Plus in India last month, Apple has launched its much-awaited Watch range in the country ahead of Diwali.
Beginning today, Apple Watch will be officially available for sale through Apple's retail channels across the country. The smart watch - in Gold, Rose Gold, Space Gray, Silver Anodized Aluminium; polished Silver or Space Black stainless steel, and 18-Carat Rose Gold and Yellow Gold - has been launched seven months after its first debut
in many countries.

Apple CEO Tim Cook thanks Indian customers

Apple Watch comes in 40 combinations in two case sizes of 38mm and 42mm across three collections of Sport, Edition, and the regular. Besides the case, the box includes a band or strap, both of which come in different material and colour combinations.
The starting price of the Silver Aluminium Case and White Sport Band is Rs 30,900 for the 38mm and Rs 34,900 for the 42mm, making these two the cheapest of the lot.

It is Rs 48,900 and Rs 52,900 for the 38mm and 42mm Stainless Steel Case respectively, with White Sport Band.
The price goes up to Rs 95,900 along with the stainless steel Link Bracelet and Rs 60,900 in the Classic Buckle leather strap option in two colours. Recently-introduced red coloured sport band is another option.

Apple Watch Edition (made in 18-Carat Rose gold casing) is the most expensive of the lot. It comes with jaw-dropping price tags that start at Rs 8.2 lakh for the 38mm model paired with the cheapest White Sport Band.

The price of the same watch's 42mm version is Rs 9.9 lakh, while the most expensive one in the series is priced at a whopping Rs 14.2 lakh. Apple Watch Hermes designer range has not been launched in India.

Apple is selling multiple standalone bands in both sizes that can be purchased separately. These are made of different materials such as fluoroelastomer, leather and stainless steel mesh as well as leather loops with magnets inside for quick fastening.

For instance, the colourful Sport Bands (available in as many as 13 shades) are priced at a steep Rs 3,900 each if someone wants to buy more.
To operate, Apple Watch needs to be paired with any iPhone (from iPhone 5 onwards) running an updated iOS, at least for the first time. Since it does not have an independent sim slot, a user can place a call only if the paired iPhone is within the 18-feet Bluetooth range. However, the call can be initiated and concluded on the Watch itself as it has a built-in speaker and a mic.

It comes to India pre-loaded with watchOS 2 and boasts of 1,300 native apps. A total of 13,000 apps are available on the Watch App Store currently.

Industry observers feel Apple inordinately delayed the launch of Apple Watch in India and may have clearly over-priced it for such a price-sensitive market.

Yet, it may well be able to score over second generation products from rivals like Samsung, Motorola and Huawei because of its overall rich user experience and intuitive interface that has always characterised Apple products.

'Reforming to Transform a Marathon, Not a Sprint,' Says PM Narendra Modi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that "transforming Indian economy is a marathon, not a sprint".

By all economic indicators, India is doing better now than when we took office 17 months ago," the PM said after inaugurating the Delhi Economics Conclave. "The GDP growth rate is up, inflation is under control. We have taken a slew reforms to put economy on the growth path. Major steps have been taken to improve efficiency, including clear performance measures and accountability mechanisms," he said.

The conclave's theme this year is 'Realising India's JAM (Jan Dhan-Aadhar-Mobile Vision)'. This is the first time ever that a Prime Minister is inaugurating the Conclave since it began in 2010.

"Believe it or not, accounts opened under Jan Dhan Yojana have a total balance of almost Rs 26000 crores," Modi said.

He highlighted his scheme of banking for all but also of social security. "What we have done in the last 17 months is to bring 190 million people into the banking system. We have introduced a Universal Account Number which will remain with an employee even when he changes jobs," the PM said.

Modi also said that India has a lot of entrepreneurial energy. "This needs to be harnessed so that we become a nation of job-creators rather than job seekers," he said.

The day-long conclave will deliberate on topics like international experience in cash transfers, the benefits and risks of biometric authentication-evidence from social programs in India, Financial Inclusion and Direct Benefit Transfer scheme.

The event is being attended by finance minister Arun Jaitley, RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, minister of state for finance Jayant Sinha, chief economic advisor Arvind Subramanian and Niti Ayog vice-chairman Arvind Panagariya, among others.
